In April 2009 Rowing New Zealand decided to postpone the Inter-provincial Championships Regatta until 2010.

As an alternative the Local Associations, KRI and SIRI arranged two Inter-provincial events; one for each Island:

• North Island Provincial Regatta
• Mainland Inter-provincial Championships
